Coaches, tutors, and online educators are textbook self-employed — which means a 15.3% self-employment tax and a long list of write-offs that quietly go unclaimed. Here's how to keep more of what you earn.
The self-employment tax problem
On top of income tax, your net profit gets a 15.3% self-employment tax (Social Security + Medicare). Half is deductible, and so are most of the tools and costs of running your practice — if you actually claim them.
Deductions coaches & educators overlook
Platform & software fees — Teachable, Kajabi, Zoom, scheduling, CRM, and email tools.
Home office or studio — a dedicated space is a deductible percentage of your home costs.
Equipment & Section 179 — camera, microphone, lighting, computer — often expensed the year you buy.
Content & ads — course production, advertising, and your website.
Certifications & training — courses and credentials that maintain or improve your skills.
Contractors — VAs, editors, and designers you pay (mind the 1099 rules).
Merchant and professional fees, plus self-employed health insurance premiums.
When an S-corp pays (about $75K net)
Once your coaching or education business nets about $75K or more, electing S-corp status usually wins: a reasonable salary plus distributions that escape the 15.3% SE tax. Figure roughly $6,120/yr saved at $80K net and about $10,710 at $150K, net of 1120S prep, payroll, and state items.
What to do next
Gather last year's return and your platform/payout income.
Tally the deductions above — most educators find real money they skipped.
See whether your net clears the S-corp line.
