US Business Credit for Foreign LLC Owners

Oct 6
6 min read

Short answer: All State Tax Resolution, led by Sabih Shafi, an IRS Enrolled Agent, helps foreign owners form a US LLC and, where it fits, build a US business credit profile. A business credit file belongs to the company, not to you, and a blog post from the US Small Business Administration (SBA) lists an EIN, a business bank account and vendors that report among the steps to build one, alongside a free D-U-N-S number. Lenders set their own rules, and the SBA says loan eligibility for a new business is typically based on its owner's personal credit score.

Key takeaways

  • An SBA blog post says an LLC can establish a credit file separate from you as an individual. With a sole proprietorship, credit activity is tied to you personally.

  • A D-U-N-S number is free from Dun & Bradstreet, usually arrives within 30 business days, and is not required to run a business.

  • The SBA blog post lists applying for business credit among the uses of the EIN. The IRS says an ITIN is for federal tax purposes only.

  • The SBA blog post says a business credit rating is generated once several trade lines are reporting, so it takes time.

  • Lenders set their own rules. We cannot promise that any lender will approve a foreign owner.

Why business credit is a separate file

An SBA blog post says that whether you run an LLC or a corporation, your business can establish a credit file separate from you as an individual. The same post says that with a sole proprietorship there is no legal or financial separation, so credit activity is tied to you and shows on your personal credit reports. Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) says its D-U-N-S Number is a nine-digit identifier used exclusively for businesses, entirely separate from a personal identity. The SBA's business guide says establishing and managing business credit can help a company secure financing with better terms, negotiate supply agreements and protect against business identity theft.

The EIN and a business bank account

The SBA blog post describes the EIN as the nine-digit number a company uses for tax returns, a business bank account, licenses and permits, and applying for business credit. The IRS online EIN tool needs the SSN or ITIN of the responsible party and cannot be used if the principal place of business is outside the US, so you apply by phone, fax or mail. We use fax, and the IRS says an EIN by fax generally arrives within 4 business days. The SBA blog post also calls opening a business bank account a mandatory step in creating a clear separation between business and personal expenses. Our guide to opening a US bank account as a non-resident LLC owner covers that step.

A free D-U-N-S number

D&B says there is no cost to request and receive a D-U-N-S Number, though you can pay a small fee to speed it up. In most cases you receive the number within 30 business days. D&B says nearly all business types can get one, from S-Corps to partnerships and LLCs. It asks for details such as the legal name, address, phone number, the owner's name, the legal structure and the year the business was created. There is no requirement to have one, but D&B says many of the world's largest companies ask for it on supplier and credit applications. The SBA's business guide names a D-U-N-S number as one of the first steps in establishing business credit.

Vendors that report

The SBA blog post says purchases from vendors and suppliers on credit, and your payments on them, get reported to business credit reporting agencies, which creates the company's credit profile. It says to choose vendors and suppliers that report, and that a business credit rating is generated once several trade lines are reporting. The post also says there are three major business credit reporting agencies, and each may hold different information about your company, so it is worth monitoring each file. Each agency lets you update basic information about your business.

What an ITIN or SSN has to do with it

The IRS says an ITIN is issued for federal tax purposes only and does not serve as identification outside the federal tax system. It says you need an ITIN if you have a federal tax purpose and you are not eligible for an SSN. The SBA blog post lists applying for business credit among the uses of the EIN. Our guide to ITIN vs EIN for foreign founders explains the difference.

What lenders decide

The SBA says loan eligibility for a new business is typically based on its owner's personal credit score. It also says lenders and loan programs have unique eligibility requirements, based in general on what a business does to receive its income, the character of its ownership, and where it operates. Dun & Bradstreet says lenders, potential partners and creditors can use a D-U-N-S Number to look up information on a business's financial stability and creditworthiness. A business credit file gives them something to look at. It does not make them say yes, and we make no promise that any lender will approve a foreign owner.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a D-U-N-S number, and does it cost anything?

It is a unique nine-digit identifier for a business, issued by Dun & Bradstreet. D&B says there is no cost to request and receive one. You can pay a small fee to speed it up.

Do I need a D-U-N-S number to have a US LLC?

No. D&B says no business is required to have one to operate. It can help with suppliers, lenders and partners that ask for it.

Do I need an ITIN to build business credit?

The SBA blog post lists applying for business credit among the uses of the EIN. The IRS says an ITIN is for federal tax purposes only. Whether you need an ITIN depends on your own federal tax situation.
